Leeds United: Sky Sports attempt to cut short Elland Road celebrations v Leicester City

Graham Smyth has shared unseen details of what happened as Leeds United players celebrated their win over Leicester City with supporters.

Leeds sealed a dramatic 3-1 comeback victory in Friday’s (23 February) battle between the top two sides in the Championship.

It sparked memorable scenes around Elland Road that went on long after the full-time whistle, but Sky tried cutting short two players’ celebrations.

However, a member of Leeds staff intervened to allow Georginio Rutter and Archie Gray to continue their lap of honour before then breaking away.

Writing on his personal Twitter page [24 February], Yorkshire Evening Post reporter Smyth said: “Nice to see a Leeds United employee protecting Rutter and Gray from FT interview duties when they hadn’t yet done a lap of honour, last night.”

Leeds keep Premier League promotion hopes on track

The full-time celebrations against Leicester will live long in the memory. While nothing was won or lost against Leicester, it felt like a special night.

Leeds closed the gap on the leaders, but more importantly they also put some distance between themselves and the chasing pack.

The fact that the game was so dramatic only added to the party-like atmosphere. A goal down and arguably deserving of being further behind, Leeds somehow struck three times in the final 10 minutes.

Sky have a habit of wanting to interview players while they celebrate, rather than letting them just enjoy the moment. It is something that becomes even more annoying in cup finals.

Good on the unnamed Leeds employee for stepping in and making it clear Rutter and Gray would first celebrate with their fans before then doing the obligatory two-minute interview.

It was another great night at Elland Road, and hopefully a sign of more of what is to come.
