BBC Sport pundit makes ‘critical’ assessment live on air after Leeds United 1-1 Coventry City

Leigh Bromby says it is “critical” Leeds United learn from their draw with Coventry City if they are to stay in the automatic promotion race.

Leeds followed up their 1-0 loss at Sunderland on Tuesday (12 December) with a 1-1 draw against Coventry on Saturday (16 December).

The wheels are at risk of falling off for United, who are 10 points adrift of second-place Ipswich Town ahead of next week’s showdown between the sides.

Leeds United manager

Speaking on BBC’s West Yorkshire Sport: Post-Match [16 December, 9m 2s], Bromby said: “The result today is big.

“Now it’s about looking at how they go about not dropping these points.

“That’s going to be critical moving forward into the second half of the season, because this group will be there come the end of the season.”

Back the players

After winning six and drawing one in a superb seven-game unbeaten streak prior to this week, Leeds basically have little to show for their hard work.

That is down to the consistent brilliance of the top two, even if Ipswich did draw 2-2 with rivals Norwich City on Saturday (16 December).

Even accounting for these two results this week, United’s form over the past few months would usually be good enough for a top-two finish.

As it is, though, they now realistically need to beat Ipswich next weekend if they are to stop the Tractor Boys running away with it.

Supporters should certainly not turn on the players, and there is every confidence in them getting things back on track.

This week’s rest ahead of the Ipswich home game has come at a good time, and there is no better fixture for the Whites to turn things around.

After all – while it may look quite bleak right now, the gap on second place could be down to seven points come this time next week.
