Leeds to target one more under-23s signing in January, players with 'very-high ceiling' wanted - Graham Smyth
Leeds United are set to bring in one more new signing for their under-23s squad in the January transfer window, according to Graham Smyth.
The Yorkshire Evening Post journalist has shared that the Whites are looking to bring in players with “very high” ceilings for around the £1million mark.
That has been the model followed at Thorp Arch, with Mateo Joseph Fernandez already arriving from Espanyol this week.
Speaking in a transfer update video for The Yorkshire Evening Post, Smyth shared how many new under-23 signings he expects this month.
“They’re spending little sums of money, in and around the £1million mark to bring in players they think have a very-high ceiling,” he said.
“It probably won’t be the last bit of business they do for the under-23s this month.
“We are expecting them to try and sign at least another one for Jackson’s side, and looking at the makeup of the squad as it is at the minute, it would not be a surprise if that were a left-back.
“That is certainly an area the club has been lacking in numbers in.”
Very high ceiling.
Leeds have transformed their academy in recent years, and now have a youth squad capable of consistently feeding players through to the first team.
Joe Gelhardt is the name that springs to mind immediately, with the likes of Charlie Cresswell, Cody Drameh and Lewis Bate all shining too.
Fernandez is the latest signing looking to make a name for himself, and he could be joined by another new left-back this month.
It would make perfect sense, with Junior Firpo the only out-and-out left-back in the senior team and under-23s put together.
The Mail on Sunday has already reported interest in Rangers left-back James Maxwell this week, so that could be one to keep a real eye on.
