Leeds to ramp up Brenden Aaronson negotiations after Elland Road resurgence

Brenden Aaronson looks set to be offered a new contract at Leeds United shortly.

The American midfielder has completely changed perceptions this season, with regular brilliant displays for Daniel Farke‘s side.

A report from TEAMtalk claimed on 13 February that the Elland Road side are going to ramp up negotiations with the 25-year-old.

It states that Aaronson‘s current deal expires in 16 months, and Adam Underwood will look to secure an extension.

How Aaronson turned from zero to hero at Leeds

Leeds supporters were raging with the midfielder’s inconsistent performances last season, as he notched nine goals and one assist.

He was clearly one of Farke’s favourites, regardless of his form, as he featured in all 46 Championship matches as the side were promoted.

There was rumours that he was on the way out in the summer, with Farke understood to be looking at attacking midfielders, however, he stayed in LS11.

That decision has proven to be the right one, as he has become a Premier League regular, making 25 appearances this season.

He has scored four goals and notched three assists so far, as he emerged as a key player for the Whites.

His underlying numbers are even more impressive, as he has created seven big chances and has won 4.15 duels per game, as shown by the Sofascore graphic above.

What has Farke said about Aaronson?

Farke loves Aaronson’s attitude and work rate, and that is a key reason why he is still part of the squad.

The Peacocks’ boss hit out at supporters who have criticised the American after the 2-1 defeat to Aston Villa in November.

In a post-match interview following the loss, he said: “I have to say Brenden is a player who polarises and can be annoying even for me. Sometimes he’s not clear enough and can be a bit hectic. But I have to say what we’re doing in criticising this young man – then we don’t have to do all these mental health awareness days.

“He represents so many skills we want to stand for as Leeds United. He works his socks off, gives everything, is relentless and leaves his heart on the pitch. It’s more than unfair at the moment.

Farke is right, the United States international goes under the radar and has been one of the main reasons for the Yorkshire club’s impressive first season back in the top-flight.

He has shaken off any criticism and arguably used it to fuel his performances, showing that he can cut it at the elite level in the process, after doubts remained after his first stint in the division.

He deserves more respect, and luckily, it appears that he is getting it from where it matters, the club itself, as he looks set to get a new deal that reflects his importance.
