Leeds take lead as Gary Lineker acknowledges ‘important moment’ in Coronavirus crisis – MOT View
Gary Lineker posted a Twitter message on Monday evening hailing Leeds United and other clubs for “supporting their non-playing staff”.
It came on a day when Liverpool finally bowed to pressure and reversed their decision to furlough staff after a public outcry.
Leeds were one of the first clubs to take the lead on the issue, with players agreeing to a wage deferral almost two weeks ago so all 272 full-time non-footballing staff could be paid.
Writing on Twitter, Lineker said, “Good to see that some of our biggest football clubs are supporting their non-playing staff. It’s an important moment for our game.
“People, and fans in particular, will remember those that stand up and do what’s right in these extraordinarily testing times.”
This is a great message from Lineker who came in for criticism himself after sending a tweet backing Premier League players in reply to Labour MP David Lammy last week.
And he’s right – it is an important moment and fans will remember who acted in the right way during this crisis.
The non-footballing staff are the absolute lifeblood of a club and many will be scared about their futures.
They don’t earn the multi-millions the players or club owners do at the top level. But clubs couldn’t exist without them.
We’re proud that Leeds did the right thing so early on and we’re happy that other clubs are following, even if Liverpool had to have their arms twisted.
Talking on talkSPORT (Tuesday 7am), Simon Jordan said Liverpool’s image had been harmed by the furore after they admitted they’d made a mistake.
Doing the right thing on your own volition is the real proof of the people behind a club.
Leeds should be hailed for taking the lead and proving that the club is still run as one big family, where everyone looks after everyone else. MOT.
