Leeds set sights on striker with international pedigree if Adams deal impossible – report

Che Adams might be the top target for Leeds United but he’s not even guaranteed to be available this January.

Many Leeds fans have been hoping that there’s a Plan B and Graham Smyth of the Yorkshire Evening Post has delivered it.

He claims that while Adams is the man they want, Leeds are also lining up a potential move for Sheffield United’s Billy Sharp as well as “a striker in Europe who has scored goals at international level”.

(Note, that doesn’t mean he’s a current international.)

Sheffield United manager Chris Wilder is quoted as saying, “I’d be looking at him [Sharp] if I wasn’t here” but hinted that if Sharp wanted a move, he would consider it.

The 33-year-old has only started one game in the Premier League this season and has scored one goal across 11 appearances.

He scored 23 goals in the Championship last season and 30 for the Blades in the 16/17 season.

He scored 12 goals in 11 games for United last season in the crucial festive period that saw his side leap up to challenge Leeds, and he made the goal that sunk us in the 1-0 defeat in March.

He would be an excellent backup for Patrick Bamford, although if he wants to leave for regular first-team football he might find that hard to come by at Leeds.

We’re less keen on the idea of a striker from Europe, whether they’re a current international or not.

The Championship is a unique division and we’d much rather have someone tried and tested at this level, especially midway through a season.

The good news is that it confirms what we’d thought all along – that Victor Orta might want Adams, but is busy with contingents if that move doesn’t come off.

In Orta (and Bielsa) we trust.
