Leeds player cancels flight to Spain as club issues advice to overseas stars – report
A number of Leeds United players have been advised to return to the UK as soon as possible after jetting out to Spain to celebrate winning the Championship title, according to The Athletic.
Kalvin Phillips, Tyler Roberts and Ian Poveda, as well as West Brom’s Kyle Edwards and Jonathan Leko, jetted out to a villa on the Spanish mainland last week. Luke Ayling, Gjanni Alioski, Stuart Dallas, Liam Cooper, Pablo Hernandez, Patrick Bamford and Barry Douglas are all understood to be in Ibiza.
The Athletic reports that another Leeds player and his partner were due to fly out to Spain but have since cancelled their flight.
The news comes after new quarantine rules were imposed by the UK government which says that anyone returning from Spain must serve 14-days of quarantine.
Leeds are fearful that players will miss the start of pre-season training if they return too late so have been proactive in their approach to getting their overseas stars back in England so that plans for next season are not affected.
It is a good move by Leeds and while the players are no doubt going to be gutted to cut short their holidays, they are bound to understand why this is happening.
At the end of the day, we are still living in the middle of a global pandemic and things are bound to change on a weekly basis, for better or worse.
In this case, people have been told they’re allowed to go on holiday with no worries about quarantine but now they’re out there in Marbella or Ibiza, that has changed and there’s not really a lot the players can do about it other than take the club’s advice on board.
Hopefully, once all of this has blown over, there will be a proper celebration for Leeds. One where fans don’t need to worry about breaking social distancing rules and one where players can really celebrate in style.
Of course, they’ve been celebrating for well over a week now but those celebrations should’ve lasted a lot longer and been a lot more intense.
In other Leeds United news, Phillips has reacted to being told he’s worse than Declan Rice.
