Leeds keen on January loan move for Barkley with buy option

Leeds United are on alert as Chelsea ponder whether to make Ross Barkley available for a January transfer, according to TEAMtalk.

The 27-year-old has been given a chance by Blues boss Thomas Tuchel to impress in recent games, but his struggles have continued and a contract extension does not appear to be on the cards as he enters the last 18 months of his deal.

Leeds favour a January loan with an option to buy, and with Barkley still hoping to force his way into Gareth Southgate’s plans for the World Cup, a Stamford Bridge exit could be on the cards for the 33-cap international.

The one-time boy wonder earns £110,000-a-week at the moment [The Telegraph], and while Chelsea will most likely be covering part of his wages if he leaves on loan, this could be a huge risk on Leeds part.

Marcelo Bielsa is not a fan of January deals for fitness reasons, but it cannot be denied that he could do with some quality additions in the winter to boost his side’s survival chances.

Barkley briefly showed sparks of his talents during the opening weeks of last season while on loan at Aston Villa, but he has struggled since, making just a solitary league start so far this term.

After seeing Jean-Kevin Augustin fail to get going during his disastrous loan spell, Leeds need to be careful going after someone who has struggled with fitness issues of recent.

One or two Murder Ball sessions could break Barkley down, and taking a punt on him is best avoided.

Bielsa could have other ideas, though, and the Everton academy graduate could prove to be a hit at Elland Road against all odds if a move works out.

One never knows with some players.
