Leeds in hunt for Espanyol striker Raul de Tomas

Leeds United want to sign Espanyol striker Raúl de Tomás in the summer, according to a report in Fichajes

The striker was signed for £20m from Benfica in January 2020 but couldn’t fire Espanyol away from relegation.

They dropped into the second tier in the summer where Tomás has scored 16 goals in 29 league games to leave Espanyol top and looking for instant promotion.

Fichajes has claimed that three Premier League sides want to sign him amid a financial crisis at Spanish clubs.

Leeds United are one of them, along with Leicester and West Ham.

The report claims that Bielsa wants back-up for Patrick Bamford and that “the possible departure of Rodrigo Moreno would facilitate his arrival.”

Rodrigo will not impact striker decision

De Tomas is a former Real Madrid striker who has Champions League experience with Benfica.

The 26-year-old has had his most prolific moments in the second tier. He scored 24 goals in 32 games in the 17/18 season in La Liga 2 for Rayo Vallecano while on loan.

The next season he did well in La Liga with 14 goals in 33 games in the top-flight.

He signed for Benfica from Real Madrid for £18m but flopped in Portugal with just three goals in 17 games.

However, that didn’t stop Benfica turning a profit on him in the 2020 January window, with Espanyol desperately looking for a striker who could save them from relegation.

That didn’t happen and it’s unlikely that they will be able to recoup £20m for him in a world that’s been ravaged by the Covid pandemic.

Fichajes is the Spanish outlet that keeps talking about Rodrigo being unhappy but we can’t see him leaving in the summer.

Even if he does, he’s not seen as back-up for Bamford at the moment. Tyler Roberts is the stand-in number nine, with Rodrigo playing the number 10 role.

Leeds could be in the market for a striker this summer but we’d like to see Joe Gelhardt and Sam Greenwood given a chance to step up.

De Tomas could be at the right level to come in and be happy as back-up for Bamford, though.
