Leeds get major promotion boost after key decision reported on Wednesday; EFL make statement
UEFA has cleared the path for the 19/20 season to be finished and for Leeds United to (hopefully) win promotion back to the Premier League.
After a major meeting on Wednesday, attended by all 55 governing bodies, UEFA cleared June of all internationals so domestic leagues can be finished.
Independent journalist Miguel Delaney went further, saying that he was told by “multiple sources” that UEFA are committed to finishing the 19/20 seasons and are planning to hold events such as the Champions League and Europa League finals behind closed doors. These competitions are currently indefinitely suspended.
He said that the idea of voiding the 19/20 season was “off the table” because it would be a legal minefield.
He said that this was already the view of the English game but in the meeting on Wednesday this was aligned across all governing bodies who all agreed that current season “must be completed, whenever that is”.
The EFL also released a statement on Wednesday night but went no further than saying that football would resume when it was safe to do so.
The EFL said further talks were taking place over the next 48 hours over the resumption of the 19/20 campaign.
UEFA meeting – the significance
It might have been impossible to put a time scale on the resumption of the 19/20 season but all parties are committed to this happening.
That was the message from the UEFA meeting on Wednesday, significant because of the 55 governing bodies that attended.
We already know that the English leagues need to work in tandem – there’s no point finishing the Championship if the Premier League is voided.
Thankfully, the noises coming from Wednesday’s meeting is that everyone is committed to finishing the current season.
That just leaves the all-important question to be answered… When can football resume?
May and June are now completely clear for the Championship and an EFL statement released on Wednesday evening didn’t postpone the season further than the April 30 date that was announced previously.
It’s all very positive for Leeds.
