Leeds director Victor Orta joins stance against European Super League
Leeds United director of football Victor Orta made his stance on the proposed European Super League clear prior to his side’s Premier League clash against Liverpool.
The Whites took to the field wearing shirts that displayed the phrase ‘football is for the fans’ while warming up, while they read ‘earn it’ on the reverse side, accompanied by the logo of the Champions League.
Leeds’ had expressed their thoughts on the proposals for a new elite continental competition on Twitter before the game, also tweeting ‘football is for the fans’.
Leeds’ owner Andrea Radrizzani shared his thoughts on the Super League on Monday morning, tweeting a statement in Italian that translated to: “Absolutely against the sporting spirit, the dream of millions of fans to conquer the championships on the field, with planning, vision, work.
“It kills dreams of clubs, players and fans. The teams are fans and WE are the keepers of the club.”
Sky Sports’ Monday Night Football coverage of Leeds’ game against Liverpool saw Orta also physically condemning the proposed competition, holding the ‘football is for the fans’ shirt out in front of him in the stands.
Great to see
Leeds have taken a hard stance on the Super League and in conveying their thoughts on the situation, and honestly we agree with their methods.
Gary Neville spoke before the game about clubs, players and fans needing to band together to prevent the proposed Super League from going ahead, and Leeds’ response is a firm statement from them.
Radrizzani and Orta’s outward disdain for the possible Champions League replacement will hopefully set a precedent, as with more coverage and more acts of defiance from those in powerful positions, the more chance we have of bringing the concept to an end.
We’ve worked so hard over the past few years to not only get promoted, but also to build a side who can compete and who can entertain fans, and we’ve worked hard to remain in the Premier League this season
Next up we want to work towards qualifying for Europe, and the Super League would shatter our dreams. We don’t want it, and we’re glad to see the club take a stand.
