Leeds could sign defender in rapid deal as journalist shares what agent told him
Leeds United could complete a deal for Newcastle defender Matt Targett “pretty quickly” if both sides push for the transfer.
The Whites are yet to make any additions to their squad this winter but there is every chance that that could change in the coming days as the deadline approaches.
Targett has been linked with a move to Leeds [The Athletic] and according to Graeme Bailey, it could be a deal that moves quickly after revealing what he had been told by his agent.
In an interview with Leeds United News [28 January], Bailey said: “It is one for the future, a long-term option. It wouldn’t surprise me [if Targett joins Leeds].
“It’s not particularly advanced, as of yesterday having checked in with his people, but Leeds have liked him for a while and it could be done pretty quickly if both sides push for it.”
Matt Targett could kickstart winter business for Leeds United
Although the Whites currently occupy the summit of the Championship, there are still some areas of improvement and in this case, some areas that need strength in depth.
Junior Firpo has been the usual go-to option at left back for Daniel Farke with his injury troubles seeing Sam Bryam deputized in his place.
Targett would arguably be an upgrade on both, if not at least the latter and given his age, it could set the Whites up nicely for the next few seasons.

With the form of Lewis Hall and Dan Burn in the North-East, Tragett has somewhat fallen out of favour at St James Park and a Championship move with guaranteed gametime could appeal to him.
Time is running out though, and if Leeds are serious about their automatic promotion ambitions, they need to start making serious approaches for incoming players with just days remaining in the transfer window.
