Leeds ace hits out at Twitter trolls and reveals one time he had to ‘query’ fans in stadium
Leeds United striker Patrick Bamford has hit out at Twitter trolls who criticise him all the time, reminding them that he is human.
Bamford, 26, is a player who has divided opinion since joining Leeds from Middlesbrough in 2018.
The striker’s goalscoring record is often questioned by supporters but Marcelo Bielsa has remained loyal to him even when he is going through a goal drought.
However Bamford admits that some supporters take things too far and he’s only had an issue with fans inside the stadium on one occasion.
“There’s only ever been one time where I’ve had a query with the fans in the stadium and that was away at Preston last year,” said Bamford, as quoted by LeedsLive.
“I remember I did that (cups his ear) to them when I scored.
“In the stadium the fans are brilliant and 95 per cent of all Leeds fans are brilliant, the way they support the players and back them to the hilt.
“Brilliant, but then you get some of those on Twitter, who forget you’re human sometimes, forget you’ve got a life outside of football.
“To me, that celebration was ‘say what you want, I’m not listening to you guys’. It wasn’t really planned. It was in the back of my mind and then when I scored it just came out.”
It is fine for you to have an opinion about Bamford. Some of us rate him, some of us don’t. Some of us will have blind faith in what Bielsa does with his team while some of us will question the Leeds United manager’s methods.
All of that is fine. However what is not fine is the amount of abuse that Bamford gets online and, sometimes, in the stadium.
It is only a minority who do it at games and it is only a minority online. However that minority always seems to be the loudest and always gets the attention.
Bamford just needs to keep his head down and do what he’s been doing.
He is, after all, the starting striker and top goalscorer for the Championship leaders.
In other Leeds United news, Bielsa would be targetted by this former forward if he lands a job as a sports director.
