Leeds ace admits he was no longer part of plans at old club before Elland Road switch
Leeds United defender Barry Douglas has revealed that he was told by Nuno Espirito Santo that he was no longer part of Wolves’ plans before his switch to Elland Road.
It would have come as a shock to the Scot after playing a key role in their Championship-winning campaign and Leeds clearly took advantage of that.
When a player moves on, it is either because he is no longer needed or the offer is too good to turn down and Douglas’ recent comments have clarified that.
Douglas admitted that he has never looked back since moving to West Yorkshire, despite the fact he hasn’t featured as regular as we all envisioned at the start.
“Very fast to be honest,” he said in an official Q&A on Friday.
“I think I’d started pre-season back with Wolves, there was a lot happening on the back of obviously winning the Championship so it was a crazy summer.
“Nuno came and spoke to me and said, ‘look this is the plan for the club moving forward and we’ve had an offer from Leeds and we’re going to accept it’.
“I had to quickly make a decision and sign for Leeds and I’ve never looked back.”
Douglas was phenomenal at Wolves, but a mixture of injuries and competition in West Yorkshire has seen him struggle compared to that time in the Midlands.
The 30-year-old has only started four games and come off the bench seven times this season and has yet to even score for the Whites during his two seasons at the club.
It has been reported by Football Insider that this season could be Douglas’ last season at the club, and he could have to prepare for another piece of bad news – this time from Marcelo Bielsa.
