Lee Dixon issues one-word response to Leeds United fan over star Kalvin Phillips after ITV comments
Lee Dixon issued a terse one-word response to a Leeds United fan questioning him over Kalvin Phillips’ omission in his best England XI.
Phillips, 25, was absent from the Three Lions side that drew 1-1 to Hungary at Wembley last night [12/10/21] after he was withdrawn from the squad with an injury last week.
With the Whites star out, ex-England defender Dixon was left to ponder Gareth Southgate’s best available side.
A Leeds supporter, Nick, appeared to get the wrong end of the stick as he said: “Interesting Lee Dixon’s comment about England best 11, I would argue Kalvin Phillips sits in that 11 all day long! I could just be a biased Leeds fan!”
Dixon responded via his personal Twitter profile, simply writing: “‘Available’,” suggesting he would have Phillips in his starting XI if fit.
Phillips importance laid bare last night
With the Leeds midfielder in the side last month, England thumped the Hungarians 4-0 in Budapest.
However, without him at Wembley, the Three Lions stuttered against a nation that had lost four of their last seven games.
Southgate elected to name Mason Mount and Phil Foden alongside Declan Rice in a much more attack-minded midfield than usual, but it was a gamble that did not pay off.
There have been suggestions by some pundits over the last week that Phillips’ spot in the England engine room may be the most precarious in the starting XI, but on the basis of Tuesday night, Southgate can’t do without the Whites star.
Playing more attackers or younger players does not always have the desired effect. If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it.
Southgate might well feel that saying applies to his England team now.
In other Leeds United news, the Whites are set to splash out on transfer fees in ‘the coming months’ after this major development.
