Leanne Crichton hails Leeds United captain Liam Cooper after Scotland assist v Denmark

Leeds United skipper Liam Cooper impressed as Scotland secured a 2-0 win over Denmark on Monday night in their World Cup qualifying campaign.

The victory saw Steve Clarke’s men book a home draw in the play-off semi-final, and the 30-year-old centre-back played a key role to put his side on the brink of World Cup qualification.

John Souttar headed in the opener from close range after Cooper nodded the ball across from a corner, and Motherwell star Leanne Crichton was impressed with the assist of the Leeds man.

She said on BBC during the game: “There is no coincidence, the delivery to the back post has been the aim from John McGinn every single time.

“Liam Cooper does incredibly well to put it back across goal and John Souttar is alive to nod it home.”

History in the making

Scotland have not been to a World Cup since 1998, but that could change next March when they compete in the play-offs.

Cooper is not the cup of tea of every Leeds fan, but his heroics on Monday night could see his country’s flag get flown at Qatar next year.

He has been flitted in and out of the starting XI throughout their qualifying campaign, but it is safe to say he has played an important role in getting them this far with his leadership a particularly important asset.

Cooper is the only outfield player to have featured in 990 minutes of Premier League action so far this season for Marcelo Bielsa’s side, and he definitely must be doing something right.

Injuries to Robin Koch and Diego Llorente have undoubtedly played a role in ensuring the Scot sees regular league action for Leeds so far, but his experience has come in very handy and the Argentine head coach trusts him.

With the Elland Road outfit struggling, Cooper needs to ensure he replicates his international form at club level to help the Whites hold on to their Premier League status at the end of the campaign.

He simply cannot afford to be playing in the World Cup as a Championship player.
