Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp has warned his players that their opening Premier League game against Leeds United will be ‘tough’ and has pinpointed where he thinks the Whites are the strongest.
Speaking to The Mirror, Klopp identified Leed’s intensity as a strong point and knows his side will have to be prepared to work hard if they want to take all three points against the Championship champions.
“We have to make sure we get ready for the first game against Leeds because that will be a really tough one, Klopp said.
“Leeds have a specific style of play, man-marking over the whole pitch, and that makes it proper intense.
“We have to be ready for that, but we have a few days.”
Liverpool will be looking to make a winning start to the season as they attempt to defend their Premier League crown, while Leeds will be looking to cause an upset at Anfield in their first top-flight game in over 16 years.
Leeds’ pre-season preparation continued with a 3-1 victory over Portuguese top-flight outfit Paços de Ferreira on Saturday, with goals from Pascal Struijk, Pablo Hernandez and Helder Costa.
After going behind in the first half Leeds rallied in the second to secure the win, and leave the Whites in good spirits heading into their season opener.
Liverpool’s latest pre-season fixture briefly looked as if it would end in embarrassment against League One Blackpool, after the Premier League champions found themselves 2-0 down after 33 minutes.
However, the Reds did rally to eventually win 7-2 with a flurry of goals coming late in the second half.
The fact that Blackpool managed to score twice at Anfield will be encouraging to Leeds, who will be hoping that club-record signing Rodrigo can get his Leeds career off to a flyer by scoring against the Premier League champions.
