Kinnear confirms Leeds talks with EFL, responds to press reports about ‘premature’ decision
Angus Kinnear has confirmed that Leeds United have remained in talks with the EFL about how to finish the currently suspended 2019/20 season.
While the general consensus in the Championship is that clubs want to complete the season, the London Evening Standard has reported that the number of teams wanting to cancel the campaign is growing.
Leeds’ managing director Kinnear believes that it would be “premature” to end the season right now and remains intent on finding a solution to finish all remaining fixtures.
The Whites have nine matches to play in their bid to win promotion to the Premier League and Kinnear has revealed just how much work has gone into the talks to ensure that those fixtures can be completed.
“Our discussions with the governing bodies of football continued this week and despite press reports of regional leagues and the premature curtailment of League’s One and Two everyone across the EFL, the Premier League and the FA and UEFA remains firm that the primary objective is to complete this season when it is safe to do so,” Kinnear wrote on the Yorkshire Evening Post website.
“The conversations between the EFL board and Club CEO’s has never been more collegiate and a huge amount of work has been undertaken with medical professionals on scenario planning the safest ways to return to competitive action.”
It could still be some time before we see Leeds play again, especially in Elland Road as most plans to complete the season include matches taking place behind closed doors.
It would hurt Leeds fans to not be able to attend matches to watch them win their promotion back to the Premier League after a 16-year absence.
However winning promotion is the priority and everyone would rather that happen than the season be voided.
