Kiko Casilla agent says he is leaving Leeds United on loan
Kiko Casilla’s agent has revealed the goalkeeper is leaving Leeds United this summer.
The 34-year-old made just four appearances last season as he has been firmly behind French goalkeeper Illan Meslier after the FA found him guilty in February 2020 for racially abusing Jonathan Leko in September 2019.
Casilla has two years left on the four-and-a-half-year deal he signed after moving to Elland Road in January 2019.
With game-time hard to come by at Leeds, the Spaniard is seeking a loan exit.
“In the next days, Kiko will move from Leeds to Spain’s La Liga on a one year loan,” his agent told LUFCFanzone, a well-established Instagram account that is followed by a number of Leeds players and has over 55,000 followers.
“Kiko loves the club, and I saw him really happy there in the past, but he needs to play.
“Illan is doing a very good job, so now it is time to move on.”
Time to move on
Casilla was never going to become Leeds first-choice goalie again the moment the FA declared him guilty of racism, and it actually came as a surprise to many that he did not leave last summer.
He played thrice in the Premier League last season, and not a lot of people liked that decision from head coach Marcelo Bielsa.
Luckily for us, Meslier has been a capable replacement, putting in performances that belie his age, and has continued to grow from strength to strength.
Given Casilla’s experience and quality, he is not going to be short of suitors back home.
Newly-promoted La Liga teams could be keen on the former Real Madrid man, and we hope he can be happy again doing what he knows how to do best.
Leeds could look to bring in a cover in the department this summer should the Spaniard leave, with 19-year-old Elia Caprile the other option available.
Casilla deserves to be playing regularly again, and we are sure that a return to Spain would help him sort things out after the recent tough months.
