Leeds United pay out ‘amazing sum of money’ after ‘stroppy’ letters sent by lawyers
Kieran Maguire has revealed the “world record” fee that Leeds United have spent on Jean-Kevin Augustin after they paid him out.
Speaking on The Price of Football on Thursday (18 April), the football finance expert explained the situation with RB Leipzig and the forward.
Leeds suggested that due to Covid, the season surpassed the financial year and as games finished in July their obligation to buy, if promoted, was null and void.
Maguire suggested that regulators disagreed and with Augustin wanting compensation too, the Whites had to pay what they owed.
He said: “CAS said we don’t agree, FIFA had said the seasons were being extended so there was a £20 million fee to pay for the player and then the player himself said ‘Hold on, since I should have had a four-year contract, on around £100k-a-week, I want compensating as well’.
“After a few stroppy letters from lawyers, Leeds decided they have to pay him up. JKA played 43 minutes for Leeds United so, therefore, this is a world record, worked out in total in terms of both the transfer fee and wages, he cost them £823,000 a minute. An amazing sum of money.”
What happened to Jean-Kevin Augustin after Leeds United?
The forward was a product of the PSG academy and had made plenty of appearances for their first and B team. According to FotMob, he scored two goals for the Parisians before making a move to Germany.
Augustin made 67 appearances for Leipzig and scored a solid 20 goals in that time. This sparked Leeds’ interest as they looked for a striker to help achieve Championship promotion.
He made just three appearances at Elland Road and featured in just 43 minutes before being dropped by Marcelo Bielsa.

After his ill-fated spell with Leeds, he moved on a free transfer to Nantes in Ligue 1 but made just 11 appearances. He was then dropped to their B team before leaving and joining Basel.
Since signing in June 2022 he has made 51 appearances and has scored eight goals in that time.
Given that he could have been featuring for Leeds in the Premier League with better performances, it has gone downhill for the former France Under 21s international.
