Kalvin Phillips wants new Leeds United contract to end transfer speculation says agent

Kalvin Phillips wants Leeds United to “honour their promise” and give him a new contract at Elland Road, according to his agent.

The Sun reported that the Whites rejected multiple bids for the England midfielder during the January transfer window, including a final £55million offer from West Ham on deadline day.

The 26-year-old reportedly has no issue with that and is happy to stay, but his agent says the club should now end transfer speculation by providing a new deal.

Kevin Sharp says, via The Sun: “Kalvin was pleased that Leeds turned those offers down.

“He has never asked to leave Leeds in all his time with the club and has no intention of doing that now or in the summer.

“But I understand the offer that was turned down would have been a record for both buying and selling clubs.

“So I would hope that Leeds would honour their promise of a new contract for him which would then end any unsettling speculation about his future this summer.”

Keep him happy

Agents are always on the lookout for a way to benefit their clients, and by extension themselves.

But in this instance it is surely in the club’s best interest to follow through with an offer.

Interest from the London Stadium is likely to not be the main concern when it comes to the prospect of losing the international star.

Manchester City (The Sun) and Manchester United (Metro) have both previously been reported as chasing him, although the player himself appears to have maintained he is happy at Elland Road.

That is of course great news for the club, but considering he is one of their standout performers, it would surely benefit them to ensure that he stays that way.

Taking advantage of a player’s boyhood loyalty is no fairer than a player holding a club hostage by trying to force through a move.

Phillips does not seem to have agitated or caused any unrest among the squad despite continual transfer speculation, so if the club has promised a new deal, they should make good on that.

Even if it is not true, England’s Player of the Year for 2021 probably would be worth the investment.
