Kalvin Phillips sends message to Leeds fans ahead of Friday night clash in London

Leeds United midfielder Kalvin Phillips was called up to Gareth Southgate’s England squad on Thursday and he’s clearly delighted with the news.

Phillips now has a very real chance of making it to the Euros in the summer.

After hearing the news Phillips sent a message out to Leeds fans ahead of the Friday night clash against Fulham.

Phillips said, “Happy to have been called back to join the England squad again next week.”

He added an image of himself in England training kit and a broad smile on his face.

The good news about Phillips was tempered slightly with the news that Patrick Bamford and Luke Ayling missed out.

Bamford will be particularly disappointed after chatter ahead of this afternoon’s announcement hinted that he was in with a real shot.

As it is, Southgate said that he was unlucky to miss out but that any injury would see him called up.

Unlucky for Bamford, lucky for Leeds

This is obviously fantastic news for Phillips and it’s pretty amazing that we were in with a shot at getting three players in the squad.

From a Leeds perspective, it would obviously better for none of the players to be selected.

England play three games in the space of just over a week and the games are packed into an already crowded Premier League schedule – that’s tough for the players.

Given that Bamford has been looking tired and has seen a drop in form, a rest for him can only be good for Leeds.

However, injuries aside, this probably rules out any possibility of him taking part in the Euros.

Ahead of the internationals, Leeds will be hoping Phillips can help them break a London curse that’s been going on way too long – since 2017.

That’s a crazy statistic that Leeds have a great chance of putting behind them at Craven Cottage.

There’s not much between either side as far as the bookies are concerned with Fulham the slight favourites at 6/4, and Leeds at 7/4 for the win.
