Kalvin Phillips return to Leeds United discussed live on talkSPORT
Kalvin Phillips would not want to return to Leeds United this January as it would damage his chances of making the Euro 2024 squad, according to Jason Cundy.
Speaking live on talkSPORT (12 October), Cundy cited the drop to the Championship for the former Elland road favourite as a key reason why England boss Gareth Southgate may opt to leave him out.
Phillips has struggled to become a regular in Manchester since his move in 2022, fueling speculation that a move from the Etihad would benefit his career.

Cundy said, as quoted by HITC: “I don’t think he wants to go back there. The reason why is that he has the Euros coming up. He’s squeaking into the England squad now and he can’t get a game at Man City.
“If he goes down to the Championship, I am not sure that helps his cause.”
Unlikely
Most Leeds fans would jump at the chance of bringing Phillips back to Elland Road, but the England international is unlikely to seek a drop to the Championship if he is to depart in January.
iNews claimed (10 October) that Newcastle and Everton are interested in his services for a January move, so Phillips could be heading away from Manchester soon.
Elsewhere, The Sun reported (12 October) that the 27-year-old could make a surprise move to German giants Bayern Munich while claiming a move in January is “likely”. While Phillips is still fond of his former club, a move to the title-holders could help reestablish him as a top midfielder.

Either way, Phillips’ career may be better served outside of Manchester City. He has not even played a full 90 in the Premier League this season, indicating that Pep Guardiola doesn’t see him as a vital part of his squad.
Phillips has faced criticism for his repeat call-ups to the England side due to his lack of game time, so he could be eager to prove his doubters wrong at a new club. At Leeds, he would certainly amass a huge amount of minutes and would be a massive boost for their promotion hopes.
However, his wages and a transfer fee would pose an issue, unless Leeds could facilitate a loan move. Phillips would probably not be encouraged to return to the Championship as his ability, despite his lack of action, is definitely above the second division.
