Kalvin Phillips repeats Leeds United mistake at Manchester City as Pep Guardiola speaks out
Kalvin Phillips has returned to Manchester City overweight after previously having problems with his condition whilst at Leeds United.
Pep Guardiola left the 27-year-old out of his squad in the Carabao Cup victory over Liverpool after revealing he wasn’t in the right condition to train or play.
According to The Athletic (23 December), this is an issue which was also present at Leeds United, with Marcelo Bielsa taking an “aggressive” approach to keep the midfielder in shape.
“Marcelo Bielsa was very strict with him, too. Under the Argentinian’s watch, Leeds players were scanned every day with results showing their lean mass, fat mass and bone mass,” wrote The Athletic.
“‘Kalvin was on the end of maybe one of Bielsa’s most aggressive approaches’, one source told The Athletic last summer.”
Not going well
It’s safe to say Phillips’ move to City has not quite gone to plan, and this latest setback will hurt the former Leeds United man. There’s no way a professional athletes should come back into their working environment, unable to train due to their weight. He’s paid a significant amount of money to perform at the highest level, and it’s unacceptable for his fitness to be an issue.
At the moment, Leeds certainly look like the club who have come out on the better side of the Phillips deal. Tyler Adams and Marc Roca have come through the door, and have looked like a solid and dependable partnership for Jesse Marsch’s side.
In fact, Adams in particular has been one of the most consistent midfielders in the Premier League and made a significant impact for his country in Qatar. Furthermore, the 23-year-old still has his best years ahead of him, something which cannot be said of Phillips.
In other Leeds United news, we can exclusively reveal a major decision being made on Liam Cooper after he missed the friendly defeat to Monaco.
