Kalvin Phillips gushes over Jordan Henderson despite Liverpool captain's Leeds United remark

Kalvin Phillips has spoken glowingly about international teammate Jordan Henderson, despite the Liverpool captain’s comments about Leeds United last month.

In April, amidst the turmoil caused by the European Super League proposals, the Whites hosted Jurgen Klopp’s side at Elland Road and wore warm-up t-shirts before the game with the tag ‘Earn It’ adorned on the front of them.

Henderson subsequently branded Leeds “disrespectful” for that in an interview with the New York Times in May.

There doesn’t seem to be any hard feelings from Phillips, however, after he paid a glowing tribute to his England midfield partner during an interview aired on Sky Sports [09/06/21].

“Whether he’s fit or not, I love having him here,” he said.

“I love speaking to him and having him around – it makes it more comfortable for players like me.”

Turn the other cheek

Phillips is a devoted Leeds player and fan, so he could have taken umbrage to Henderson’s comments last month.

But he has shown his maturity by harbouring no ill feelings towards the Liverpool skipper, who looks to have taken the 25-year-old under his wing.

Henderson wasn’t flavour of the month with Whites supporters after his disparaging comments, but it was a difficult time for everyone in football after the ‘Big Six’ English clubs tried to fleece the rest of the country.

That wasn’t the fault of the players at those clubs, and the t-shirts worn by the Whites weren’t designed to intimidate or disrespect their fellow professionals in any way, it was merely a public cry for help with the English game in disrepute and in danger of being changed forever.

Henderson is clearly a very mature player who is widely respected among his peers, and his decorated trophy cabinet is a reflection of his talent and character.

He may have just been slightly askew with his words last month, but that should be left in the past now, and we’re looking forward to seeing a Phillips-Henderson midfield partnership at this summer’s European Championships.
