Kalvin Phillips could captain Leeds United if Liam Cooper does not start v Chelsea
Kalvin Phillips could reportedly wear the captain’s armband for Leeds United when they take on Chelsea on Wednesday.
According to LeedsLive reporter Beren Cross, this would be the first time in the Premier League that the Englishman would be captaining the Whites side.
Liam Cooper is in contention to play but there are still doubts as to whether or not he starts this game.
Right call
Phillips is undoubtedly a player who commands the respect of the dressing room and fully merits being the captain.
Not only is he a good communicator, but he lets his performances on the field do most of the talking.
Leeds were in a mess when he was injured and they now look more organised with him back in the team.
Usually, Luke Ayling steps in as captain in Cooper’s absence, but he is suspended and is set to miss the rest of the season.
His needless challenge against Arsenal saw him receive a straight red card for violent conduct and also a three-match Premier League ban.
This came at the worst time possible for the Whites and they will have to find a way to deal with the Englishman’s absence.
Whether that means a return for Jamie Shackleton or Dan James playing out of position as a wing-back, remains to be seen.
Jesse Marsch surely has a tough task on his hands and it remains to be seen how things transpire against the Blues.
