Kalvin Phillips could be sent back to Leeds United, Pep Guardiola unhappy with Manchester City ace - Gabby Agbonlahor
Gabby Agbonlahor suggests Manchester City midfielder Kalvin Phillips is in danger of being sent back to Leeds United after his poor performance in the 2-0 loss against Southampton in the EFL Cup on Wednesday (11 January).
Phillips, who joined City in the summer window from Leeds, has struggled with form and fitness. Pep Guardiola gave him a rare start in midfield in the cup game but failed to make an impact.
He was very poor on the night and was taken off in the 63rd minute. Agbonlahor said on talkSPORT that Guardiola will not be happy with Phillips for that performance.
“I think Kalvin Phillips is in danger of being coached to Leeds,” said Agbonlahor on talkSPORT.
“He has had his injury problems. Last night was the perfect game for him to start and show what he is about.
“After 63rd minute, he [Pep Guardiola] had to bring him [Rodri] on because Phillips was that bad. He couldn’t do anything right in the game.
“He is in big danger because Pep will not be happy.”
Marsch won’t mind
Jesse Marsch won’t mind if Guardiola wants to send Phillips back to Elland Road on loan.
The England midfielder has struggled with fitness, and he has managed just five minutes of Premier League action all season.
After Wednesday’s performance, Guardiola won’t be happy with him and there is a possibility that Phillips could be sent out on loan.
He is a hero at Leeds and will be welcomed back at Elland Road. Leeds could be looking to sign a new midfielder as well following the departure of Mateusz Klich.
Phillips won’t take much time in settling in at Elland Road and could play an important role for the club as the Whites look to climb up the table.
In the process, he could get regular games that should boost his confidence.
Having said that, Phillips probably won’t be a guaranteed starter at Leeds. Under Marcelo Bielsa, he played in a different system, where he was the deep-lying playmaker cum anchor man.
However, Marsch follows a different system where Marc Roca and Tyler Adams act as a double pivot. But surely, he can alter his system to accommodate a quality player like Phillips.
In other Leeds United news, the Whites are keen on signing this Wolves player in January.
