Juventus boss Max Allegri left ‘Perplexed’ by Weston McKennie transfer to Leeds United

Juventus manager Max Allegri didn’t want Weston McKennie to leave the club last January to join Leeds United, according to Il Bianconero.

The USA international midfielder joined the club on loan for the second half of the season and failed to make an impact, falling out with fans as the club were relegated to the Championship.

He has since returned to Turin under Allegri after failing to agree a move elsewhere during the summer and is now using his new experiences to get back into the Juventus side.

Leeds United

“It is true that Weston McKennie was a key element in Max Allegri’s strategies during his first spell at Juventus,” they wrote.

“McKennie’s temporary transfer to Leeds last January was a moment that left the coach perplexed.

“While his time in the Premier League may have offered McKennie new experiences and growth opportunities, his return to Juventus could actually bring new lessons learned during his time abroad.”

Destiny

When the opportunity to sign another USA international emerged in January, with Jesse Marsch still at the helm and the team looking light in midfield it made sense.

But it quickly became apparent, especially after Marsch was sacked, that McKenie didn’t want to be here and it showed in his performances.

He never looked fit, he barely impacted games and his attitude made it clear that he felt he was too good to be in a relegation battle, which ultimately contributed to our drop into the Championship.

So it’s surprising to hear that the Juventus manager didn’t want him to come to Leeds, because the whole reason the deal happened was because he wasn’t playing in Italy and wanted regular football.

It’s a deal that ew would all rather remember didn’t happen because there were literally zero positives to it, but at least we’ve had some confirmation now that the feeling was mutual for all parties.
