Junior Firpo training alone at Leeds United under Marcelo Bielsa instructions

Marcelo Bielsa has restricted new Leeds United defender Junior Firpo to individual training this week, according to LeedsLive.

The 24-year-old was officially announced as a Leeds player on Tuesday after intense speculation surrounding his move from Barcelona to West Yorkshire.

However, while he was thrust straight into training at Thorp Arch, his interaction with the first-team squad has been limited by his new boss Bielsa.

As reported by LeedsLive, Firpo has been training alone for the past few days, under the orders of ‘El Loco’.

This was something Firpo told on LiveNow [relayed via LeedsLive]. He said: “The first days, Marcelo wants me to train alone to introduce the work because the style of training here is really different from Barcelona and from other teams.”

High demands

It’s no surprise to hear Firpo is training away from the group at the moment – Bielsa’s methods take some getting used to.

The Argentine is famed in football for his high-intensity training drills and he places huge expectations upon his players, and it can be sink or swim or some.

Bielsa’s a smart man, and he knows it can be daunting for new recruits or academy prospects to instantly adapt to his practices, therefore it makes complete sense to allow Firpo some time to adjust to his settings and be more or less drop-fed information in the first few days.

There’s no doubt that the Spanish full-back will be quickly brought up to speed and introduced into the first-team fold with the start of the Premier League season just over a month away, but Bielsa isn’t going to rush the process.

It feels like the new campaign is just around the corner for fans, but the players probably won’t be feeling the same as they endure another arduous pre-season campaign to get them back up to full fitness.
