Junior Firpo ‘talks with Leeds United planned’ as Elland Road exit near

Leeds United could potentially be without Junior Firpo in the Premier League after winning promotion at Elland Road.

The former Barcelona left-back has been a key player for the Whites this season, as he scored in their 6-0 win against Stoke City in the Championship on 21 April.

Firpo’s current contract at Elland Road is in its final months, and he’ll leave the West Yorkshire outfit next summer if fresh terms can’t be agreed.

With a return to the top flight after a two-year exile now sealed, 49ers Enterprises have to get to work on their plans for the upcoming campaign.

Leeds United talks planned by Firpo once season ends

Firpo expects to discuss his future with the Peacocks once the season ends.

The Dominican Republic star has been focused on winning promotion at the Whites for most of the campaign, and since that’s been achieved, he may hold talks with the hierarchy soon.

Firpo is uncertain about his future at Elland Road as things stand, and is waiting for the West Yorkshire outfit to make a decision in the coming weeks.

Speaking to YEP (25 April), the 28-year-old defender said: “Last time that we spoke, I probably told you that I was focused on promotion. Promotion is done now. But I don’t know. I don’t know.

“I think it’s something to speak with the club about, maybe when the season is done, you know, and they have more clear plans as well. Let’s see what happens.”

49ers need competitive squad for Premier League

Firpo has arguably done enough to deserve a new contract at Elland Road after helping the Whites return to the top flight.

The left-back was part of the West Yorkshire outfit’s squad that were relegated from the Premier League in 2023, but he’s developed into a better player since then.

With the West Yorkshire outfit undoubtedly in need of top-flight experience, it’d make sense to keep someone like the 28-year-old defender in the squad for next season.

Leeds have been linked with Tomas Soucek, with the West Ham United midfielder playing a key role at the East London club over the years.

It isn’t surprising to see the Whites being linked with players who have been playing in the Premier League for some time now.

While the West Yorkshire outfit have one of the best squads in the Championship, the English top flight is a different kettle of fish.

Southampton and Leicester City, who won promotion last season, are returning to the Championship, with Ipswich Town’s prospects also looking bleak.

The 49ers will need to hand Farke a strong squad going into next season if they’re ambitious about competing with the big guns.
