Junior Firpo sends warm message to Harvey Elliott after first game since injury v Leeds

Leeds United full-back Junior Firpo has taken to Twitter to extend his delight at seeing Liverpool’s Harvey Elliott back on the pitch.

The 18-year-old suffered a nasty ankle injury in the Premier League encounter between the two sides in September at Elland Road which saw Pascal Struijk sent off for the tackle.

He made his return to the pitch in Liverpool’s FA Cup fourth-round tie against Cardiff City at Anfield and scored in front of the Kop for the first time.

Firpo played in the September clash and witnessed the incident first-hand, so he was delighted to see Elliott return on Sunday (6 February).

“So good to see you back on the pitch, Harvey!” he said responding to a tweet from Liverpool’s official account.

No one would have batted an eyelid if the 25-year-old from the Dominican Republic didn’t respond to the message but it shows his humility that he did.

It was a contractual obligation or a guilty apology, just one footballer wanting the best for the other.

That might have been frowned upon in the olden days when players were much more aggressive and unwavering with their opponents but that won’t fly these days.

Elliott is a young kid with a lot of talent and even Leeds supporters won’t have enjoyed seeing him stretchered off at Elland Road in September as the Reds ran out 3-0 winners.

It might only be a small gesture but it is something more players need to follow in the footsteps of and Firpo is a leading example of a true leader.

Marcelo Bielsa may have had that effect on him as the most honest of managers and hopefully, it continues in the future with Leeds stars leading the way in empathy.

In other Leeds United news, this Whites ace is the Premier League’s leading player in one specific stat, teammates are letting him down.
