Junior Firpo reacts as Leeds make new transfer announcement

Leeds United are not short of transfer targets as they look to assemble a squad worthy of challenging in the Premier League.

The Peacocks are targeting players with top-flight experience as well as prospects from Europe’s leading leagues, as they push for survival.

However, they are also primed for exits, with Junior Firpo hotly tipped to depart Leeds this summer.

Firpo has been linked with several European clubs with his contract expiring, including Real Betis, and he has reacted to the latest transfer news from Elland Road.

Firpo reacts to latest Leeds United transfer news

With his contract at Elland Road set to expire, Firpo will be available to leave Leeds as a free agent from July 1.

The left-back enjoyed a phenomenal season in the Championship, notching 14 goal contributions as the Peacocks won the title.

Firpo was also outstanding defensively and was recognised as one of the top performers in the entire division.

As a result, the Dominican international is a wanted man and appears to be rejoining Real Betis, a club he spent five years at previously.

While nothing has been confirmed, it is expected that Firpo will depart Elland Road after four years with the Yorkshire club.

However, that has not stopped the 28-year-old from welcoming the Whites’ first acquisition of the summer through the door.

Leeds recently announced the signing of Lukas Nmecha on a free transfer from VfL Wolfsburg; he will join after his contract expires at the end of June.

On the Premier League club’s Instagram (15 June), they pictured Nmecha sitting in the Elland Road stands, with the message “new home, new journey”.

Firpo then liked the post, effectively giving the transfer a seal of approval.

Nmecha is a transfer gamble for Leeds

Looking at Nmecha’s numbers over the years for Wolfsburg, he appears to be something of a gamble for the Premier League club.

The German predominantly plays as a centre-forward, but has only managed 19 goals in 85 appearances, with injuries hitting hard.

That works out as around a goal every four and a half games, although he mostly featured as a substitute last season.

Of course, Nmecha is arriving at Elland Road on a free transfer, so it is not as if Leeds have paid big money for the 26-year-old.

The forward would argue he needs game time to score goals, which he will likely get more of under Daniel Farke.

Considering Joel Piroe’s exploits last season, he would probably start ahead of Nmecha, but at least Farke has competition, with more signings already guaranteed.
