Junior Firpo now has thigh issue as Leeds United without defender v Crystal Palace – Phil Hay

Junior Firpo has now picked up a thigh problem as he continues his injury woes at Leeds United, according to Phil Hay in the last 24 hours.

The Athletic journalist shared the news with more details on Monday (10th October) after Jesse Marsch confirmed his absence in the defeat at Crystal Palace.

Pascal Struijk continued at left-back in that defeat, scoring his first goal of the season as the club went through yet another transfer window with no new signing in that area.

Speaking on the latest episode of the Phil Hay Show podcast on Monday (10/10), the journalist shared the extent of the issue picked up by the Spaniard.

“I’m told that he’s got a slight thigh problem,” he said.

“I think as it stands at the moment, it’s hard to see him shifting Struijk from the team, I think Struijk has done enough to keep himself there, but it seems to me that at some point they’re going to have to bite the bullet at left-back and sign somebody else. It doesn’t need to be someone vastly experienced, it can be a project of sorts provided that you feel confident enough to play them in first-team games.

“Firpo almost falls into the category of Bamford at the moment, the conversation about him of how it could be when you have Firpo in the team when he has a run in the team. He’s another player that hasn’t played much at Leeds.”

Blow.

This has been nothing short of a disaster, we all know that.

Even Firpo will be questioning himself now with it being just one problem after another constantly, especially this season between now and the summer.

After starting pre-season on fire against Blackpool, he was then ruled out for weeks and hasn’t really recovered properly since then, picking up another problem against Aston Villa.

Struijk has been solid enough, but the general thought is having an out-and-out left-back would surely make Leeds look better than they have, especially going forward.

Victor Orta must surely be adding another left-back on his wishlist now at Elland Road, either in January or next summer, with there being no way we can go longer than that without another signing in that area.

Even the under-21s don’t have any options to promote into the first-team squad, so it is looking bleak in that area if no money is sorted and the squad will suffer.

Firpo cannot have many chances left.
