Journalist shares where Wilfried Gnonto will be on Monday as 49ers stance emerges on Leeds United star

Wilfried Gnonto is expected back in pre-season training with Leeds United on Monday after a bid from Everton was rejected, says LeedsLive journalist Beren Cross.

The Daily Mail reported on Sunday (16 July) that the Toffees have had a £15million approach knocked back by Leeds for the Italy winger.

Leeds, though, seem intent to keep Gnonto at Elland Road, with the club’s prospective new owners 49ers Enterprises wanting Gnonto to stay beyond the end of the transfer window.

Cross wrote on Facebook: “Leeds United have rejected a £15m offer from Everton Football Club for Wilfried Gnonto.

“49ers Enterprises remains committed to retaining the Italian beyond September 1 if it can.

“Teenager expected back for pre-season from tomorrow.”

Great news for Leeds fans

There is no dressing up the fact that the 2022-23 season was a shambles for Leeds United, who were relegated from the Premier League after three different managers – Jesse Marsch, Javi Gracia and Sam Allardyce – failed to spark an upturn in fortunes.

One of the few bright sparks for the Whites was Gnonto, who signed from Swiss side FC Zurich last September.

The biggest disappointment for Leeds fans really was the fact Gnonto was used so sparingly. Indeed, he made 24 Premier League appearances but only 14 starts, scoring two top-flight goals.

There has been no shortage of interest this window, with the likes of Inter Milan and Juventus having been linked with a move as well as Everton.

But he could be a real asset in the Championship next term, and Leeds fans will hope that seeing him return to training is a sign that his long-term future remains in West Yorkshire.
