Journalist claims football may not return until July after Boris Johnson delivers update

After Boris Johnson’s latest update on Sunday evening, Josh Challies has claimed that Leeds United may not return until at least July.

The Leeds Live journalist claimed that the Premier League or the EFL will struggle to return with the lockdown measures not set to move into the next phase until the beginning of June.

It seems more unlikely as times goes on that the EFL may void all three of their divisions, with relegation and promotion set to stand.

Challies wrote that although it would be a boost, Johnson’s comments highlight that stress levels are rising and the time isn’t right for football to return.

“It seems unlikely that Premier League or EFL football will be played in June, with the current measures remaining in place until at least June 1st before phased easings of the measures,” he wrote.

“While the government is keen on football returning to provide a boost to morale, the Prime Minister stressed now is not the time for the restrictions to be eased.”

One thing we do know for sure is that once football does return, it will be behind-closed-doors with no fans at the stadium.

The EFL have maintained the stance that they want relegation and promotion to stand, with chairman Rick Parry claiming the Premier League going against that would break an agreement between the two organisations.

At first, all 24 Championship clubs wanted the season to be concluded with only nine games left to be played. Now, that seems to have changed.

The Times reported that a growing number of second-tier clubs would like the season to be abandoned, something which would more than likely see Leeds promoted.

With the possibility of no sport until July in England, there will come a time in the next month where common sense may prevail and the Championship season will be cancelled, time will tell.
