Jose Mourinho thrilled by Kalvin Phillips EUROs display v Croatia

Jose Mourinho has hailed Leeds United midfielder Kalvin Phillips for his ‘fantastic’ performance against Croatia at the EUROs on Sunday.

The Leeds man played in a slightly advanced role reminiscent of the pre-Bielsa days and terrorised the opposition midfield.

He also provided the assist by making a stunning defence cut pass that saw Raheem Sterling scoring the first and only game to ensure that the Three Lions began their EUROs campaign with three points for the first time in their history.

Speaking to talkSPORT after the game, Mourinho said, “First of all, he’s [Phillips] a player without international experience. He’s not a player that arrives from the Champions League or 20-25 caps in his pocket.

“He’s a player that arrives from the Championship and plays a whole season in the most intense league in the world.

“He showed amazing personality. Phillips was more than stable and he showed that not just in the goal but also in the way he was pressing higher.

“He was not afraid of pushing up. Don’t remember him missing a pass in a dangerous area.

“I think he was very, very good. To see young guys performing like this, I think it’s fantastic.”

Jose is spot on

Phillips’ exceptional season didn’t just end with the Premier League as he’s carried on playing at the highest level at the EUROs as well.

A couple of years ago, when we were in the Championship, few would’ve imagined him being in the playing eleven for an international tournament, and playing a huge part in securing England’s record-breaking victory.

This should make up Southgate’s mind to continue with the pivot of Declan Rice and Phillips as the Leeds midfielder could easily play the holding role and storm forward whenever the opportunity arises.

The fact that he covered the most ground of any player on the pitch and was the first England player to assist a goal on his first European Championship appearance since David Beckham in 2000, hopefully means that he’s on his way to have an exceptional tournament for the national side.

We’re delighted that he’s part of our team and cannot wait to see him in action when England take on Scotland and the Czech Republic.
