Jose Mourinho expects Kalvin Phillips to start against Scotland
Jose Mourinho expects Leeds United star Kalvin Phillips to retain his place in England’s line-up against Scotland tonight.
The midfielder has been on top of his game for a while now and was in fine form against Croatia in the Three Lions’ European Championship opener on Sunday.
Phillips carved the Croats’ defence wide open for his assist to Raheem Sterling and was equally brilliant in the middle of the park for England.
A win against the Scots will see Gareth Southgate’s men book a place in the last-16, and Mourinho believes starting the Leeds star could be key to a crucial victory.
“Gareth Southgate got his team right against Croatia and I expect an unchanged England team,” the Roma boss told The Sun..
“Kalvin Phillips was all over the field — attacking, defending, pressing high, following Luka Modric, giving great intensity to the team.
“It was a great decision by Gareth and Phillips has to play now.”
The 25-year-old was our man-of-the-match against Croatia, and we expect him to put in a similar shift tonight.
The Leeds star did more than enough on Sunday to earn another start, and is slowly establishing himself as a key cog in England’s midfield as he has done with the Whites.
Rival Premier League fans refused to see the sense in the way the Elland Road faithful went on about Phillips’ quality and huge potential upon our return to the top-flight.
That has changed since Sunday, and we expect him to turn more doubters into believers going forward at Euro 2020.
The Leeds man simply has to start every of England’s important games at the tournament, and we do not expect Southgate to think otherwise.
All eyes will be on Phillips tonight, and we cannot wait to see him boss the opponents again.
