Jonny Buchan stunned by what he saw Georginio Rutter do for Leeds United in 2-1 win v Bristol City
BBC presenter and journalist Jonny Buchan says he was stunned by Georginio Rutter’s miss during Leeds United’s 2-1 win over Bristol City on Saturday.
The French youth striker turned in a top performance at Elland Road as Joel Piroe and Daniel James’ goals earned all three points for the Whites, but Rutter missed an open goal with the game at 0-0 to stun fans in the stands.
And speaking on the BBC’s Don’t Go To Bed Just Yet podcast (9 October), Buchan labelled the miss as “staggering” but admitted he didn’t want to focus on the negatives too much.
“My phone lit up when Rutter missed that chance,” he said.
“I had messages and videos coming in left, right and centre. It was a staggering miss, wasn’t it?
“I don’t want to focus on the negative because there were a lot of positives, but wow. What a miss that was.”
Crazy
Rutter has been fantastic this season and there is no doubting that many fans were questioning what his role would be this year after the first six months of his life at Elland Road.
His dribbling, passing and finishing for the most part this season has been good but there is always room for criticism and the miss against Bristol City was definitely shocking.
He was in a perfect position to receive the ball, had time to get it right and just executed it poorly. In truth, it was a chance that was harder to miss for him.
Fans rightly won’t go too hard on him because we won the game and he played well, and we all know that those things can happen to even the best of the best, but Rutter must ensure he doesn’t let it get to him and that it doesn’t become a regular thing in his game.
He has the potential to go up a level or two and if he can start finding the back of the net consistently it will help the team and make him even more important.
