John Percy: C’Ship clubs told return date for training, early June restart unlikely for Leeds
Championship clubs have been told on Wednesday that a return to full-training isn’t recommended until the 25th of May, meaning an early June restart for Leeds United is unlikely.
The Daily Telegraph reporter John Percy revealed the insight on his personal Twitter account after all 24 clubs in the second-tier had a conference call on Wednesday.
It is suggested that clubs argued that their players need at least three full weeks of training before returning to action, making the beginning of June an improbable target.
This update did suggest that it was ‘full’ training, which could mean that Leeds players are allowed to return to Thorp Arch earlier than the 25th, but they will be expected to work in smaller groups and in shorter time frames.
It was reported by the BBC that Premier League clubs are taking measures such as disinfecting all equipment and pitches daily, as well as working in maximum groups of five – something which could filter down to the Championship.
Marcelo Bielsa is known for his strict rules around the training facility and will want his players in close proximity to complete their fitness work.
The South American has already turned up to Thorp Arch without warning during the lockdown with a list of demands which included areas that needed cleaning thoroughly [The Athletic].
That will most likely mean that the Boston Spa base will be ready whenever necessary for the Whites to use and in top shape for all staff and players.
Either way, this is a step in the right direction, as the EFL are clearly preparing to finish the remaining nine fixtures in the Championship.
