John Cross raves about BBC for Leeds United decision ahead of clash v Chelsea

The Mirror’s John Cross has praised the decision from the BBC to provide Radio 5Live coverage of Chelsea’s Premier League clash against Leeds United this weekend.

Graham Potter is under immense pressure at Stamford Bridge and is in desperate need of a result on Saturday (4 March) to stave off calls for the sack.

Javi Gracia takes his team to West London hoping to make it back-to-back Premier League victories to kickstart his tenure at the club.

The BBC have selected the game at Stamford Bridge for the 3pm radio slot, a decision which has been praised by Cross.

“Radio 5Live has chosen Chelsea’s clash with Leeds as the pick of the commentaries in the Saturday 3pm slot rather than title-chasing Arsenal v Bournemouth,” wrote Cross (The Mirror, pg 61, 3 March).

“That now looks like a good selection with the Blues boss Graham Potter under huge pressure – and his future could be defined by the next two games. The BBC station has reinvented itself in the past year and Saturday coverage – particularly Ian Dennis’ superb work on live 3pm games – is second to none.”

Consequences

The consequences of defeat for either club could be huge. For Leeds, they’re still perilously close to the relegation zone and will more than likely find themselves in the bottom three with a defeat. For Potter, there’s a good chance he won’t be the Chelsea manager come Monday morning if Gracia’s side picks up all three points.

There’s a lot riding on this one – and we can see why the fixture would attract so much attention. Back-to-back wins for Leeds would be invaluable at this point in the season.

The close-knit nature of the Premier League relegation battle means consecutive wins can pull you well clear of trouble. Leeds’ 2-0 FA Cup loss to Fulham was disappointing, but also to be expected. The West Londoners are flying this season and a cup run takes a back seat when top-flight survival is at stake.

Saturday’s clash at Stamford Bridge promises to be a pivotal one for so many reasons.
