John Barnes delivers verdict on Leeds United midfielder Kalvin Phillips

John Barnes has suggested that Leeds United midfielder Kalvin Phillips would suit Liverpool because of his playing style.

The 26-year-old has established himself as one of the finest midfielders in the league and played a huge role for the Three Lions as they reached the finals of Euro 2020.

He has suffered from injury problems this season, but the midfielder is expected to return after the international break.

“Kalvin Phillips would suit Liverpool’s midfield. If you are a hardworking, strong midfield player who plays with high intensity – then you’ll suit Liverpool,” said Barnes to BonusCodeBets, as relayed by Leeds Live.

“If you’re more technical then you’d suit Manchester City [better]. He won’t necessarily sign for Liverpool because he’s at Leeds and is happy, but in terms of if he’d suit Liverpool – then absolutely.”

Big decision

New Leeds boss Jesse Marsch has made it clear [17 March] that he wants Phillips to be at the club beyond the summer [Leeds Live].

Phillips has shown no inclination to leave as well, but his future will be largely linked to where Leeds finish at the end of the season.

The Whites are fighting for survival, and currently sit 16th in the table, four points above the bottom three.

He has previously expressed his desire to extend his contract at the club. However, if the Whites get relegated at the end of the season, chances are high that they won’t be able to hold on to him.

According to a recent report from The Times, Aston Villa have emerged as favourites to sign the midfielder. The Villans are willing to break their club record and table £60million to secure his signature.

However, if Liverpool come up with a tempting offer, Phillips may find it hard to refuse straightaway.
