Joe Gelhardt shares what he asked Daniel Farke ahead of Leeds United exit
Joe Gelhardt has revealed that he went to Daniel Farke personally to request an exit from Leeds United for the second half of the 2024/25 season.
The striker secured himself a loan deal with fellow Yorkshire club Hull City and hit the ground running almost instantly with a stunning debut goal.
Prior to his Elland Road exit, he’d only appeared four times for the Whites this season, so a loan move is exactly what he needed to get himself back on track.
Speaking to Hull Live (24 January), Gelhardt shared what he said to Farke when asking to leave West Yorkshire.
“That’s football (lack of playing at Elland Road),” he said.
“Sometimes, you don’t play; you can’t sit there and moan about it; you’ve got to crack on with it, but I had a conversation with him (Farke) just before January about what my plan was going to be.
“As a footballer, you want to play games, so I told him that I’d like to go out on loan and try and play if I’m not in his plans, and he agreed to it; he let me, and he was happy with it.
“I just like playing football, and obviously, I won’t get the minutes I’d have liked at Leeds. The other option was a loan, so that’s what I wanted to do. I wanted to play football, and I’m thankful to this club for showing interest.”
Leeds United will be hoping for Joe Gelhardt to come back all guns blazing
Since the start of his career, Gelhardt has been lauded as a massive talent which is why Leeds spent around £1million [LeedsAllOver] to pry him away from Wigan in the first place.
However, over the last couple of seasons, the amount of game time he’s receiving has dwindled which, in turn, has resulted in the striker’s career halting somewhat, which isn’t ideal for either party.
A loan move has felt like something that’s been on the cards forever and now that he’s finally been allowed to make the switch, he can really prove his worth.
At the moment, Hull are in quite a bad spot with the Tigers currently sitting 22nd in the second-tier table.

Thanks to Gelhardt’s arrival, Ruben Selles’ men could see their season turn around and perhaps help get the 22-year-old’s career back on track.
Granted, Leeds already have Mateo Joseph, Joel Piroe and Patrick Bamford to choose from but if ‘Joffy’ can realise his potential, he could easily become a key cog in Leeds’ system.
