Joe Gelhardt needs to be axed as Leeds United loanee struggles – former Sunderland forward

Former Sunderland striker Stephen Elliott has called for Joe Gelhardt to be axed from the Black Cats’ starting eleven as the Leeds United loanee endures a tough run of form.

The 20-year-old has been a constant feature for Tony Mowbray’s side, scoring one goal and registering two assists in 10 Championship games.

Elliott now believes the time is right for the misfiring youngster to come out of the starting lineup at the Stadium of Light.

“Joe Gelhardt is a good player and I believe he will go on and have a top career but it just doesn’t seem to be working for him at the moment,” said Elliott (Sunderland Echo, 20 March).

“I think he has a clever football brain and he takes up decent positions but I feel it may be time to give somebody else a run up there.”

Vital

This loan spell is a vital stage of Gelhardt’s development – and it’s one he can ill afford to pass up. He’s been given gametime by Mowbray, it’s now about taking his chances and showing he is a level above the second tier.

The 20-year-old has missed some big chances in recent weeks and the onus is now on him to get back into form.

The board sent him out to get game time and that’s exactly what is happening. If his poor form continues then a big decision will have to be made come the start of the 2023/24 season, especially if Leeds retain their Premier League status. We are all aware of what he’s capable of, but whether he’s Premier League-ready is up for debate.

Leeds United

In an ideal world, Gelhardt will score five-plus goals between now and the end of the season and propel the Mackems towards the playoffs. That should constitute enough evidence to suggest he’s ready to make an impact at Elland Road.

He’s at an age where a decision needs to be made on what his level is. There will still be many in West Yorkshire who feel it’s in the top flight.

In other Leeds United news, long-planned contract negotiations have “not progressed” leaving Elland Road exit door open.
