Joe Gelhardt axed from Leeds United squad as Daniel Farke preference emerges

Daniel Farke has shown his preference at Leeds United after Patrick Bamford was chosen over Joe Gelhardt in his latest squad, according to Nancy Froston.

The journalist reported that since Gelhardt was axed from the squad for the 2-0 win over Cardiff on 21 September, Farke made his preference known.

Bamford has been struggling with injury since the end of last season, with Mateo Joseph and Joel Piroe the current main options at Elland Road.

Joe Gelhardt needs to find a Leeds United exit soon

Despite Bamford only just returning to full fitness, the fact that he was instantly chosen over Gelhardt on the bench shows where the 22-year-old stands in terms of his Leeds future.

The striker was the talk of the town when he first burst onto the scene at Wigan before he made the move to West Yorkshire, but it has never quite worked out.

The striker even made some Premier League appearances, scoring that famous winner against Norwich, but his progression seems to have just halted.

Gelhardt was consistently linked with a move away throughout the summer window but that never happened due to his current wages at Elland Road [Graeme Bailey, 6 September].

It was also suggested that with the Whites not adding any further attacking additions to their ranks, they didn’t want to run the risk of being short as they got deeper into the season [Yorkshire Evening Post, 30 August].

Whatever the reason was, it feels as if now is the best time for both parties to cut their losses and part ways either in January or next summer.
