Joe Cole encourages Leeds to 'make good decisions' in the transfer market

Joe Cole has encouraged Leeds United to make the correct decisions in the transfer market this summer as the club look to build on a successful return to the Premier League.

Currently sat in mid-table, Marcelo Bielsa quickly established his side as a free-flowing and energetic team upon their return to the Premier League, moving back into the top flight for the first time since 2004.

The Whites spent around £100million in the transfer window last summer [Leeds Live], the majority of which went towards bringing Helder Costa, Illan Meslier, Rodrigo, Robin Koch, Diego Llorente and Raphinha.

Talking to Rio Ferdinand on BT Sport prior to Leeds’ game against Chelsea on Saturday [Yorkshire Evening Post], Cole expressed his excitement over the many future nights at Elland Road if the club get their summer transfer business correct.

Cole said: “With the crowd back in here that’s another five, six, seven points on the total. Just staying in the league is an achievement but also doing it with a style of football.

“We know Bielsa, we know what he can bring. But the future is bright for Leeds. They just need to always be mindful of where they was when Rio was in the side just before he left and that fell to bits quickly.

“They just need to make good decisions in the transfer market, back this man (Bielsa), back his judgement and we are going to have a lot of exciting nights here coming to watch them because they are a real high tariff, exciting, vibrant, attacking team.”

Makes an important point

Leeds have certainly looked at home in the Premier League this season, and that’s all due to the way in which Marcelo Bielsa has set us up to succeed.

Unlike most promoted clubs who cling to the hope that they might survive the season, Bielsa has instilled in his players the belief that they can take on and beat anyone in the league, and that has stood the club in terrific stead.

Cole is right to suggest that Leeds be careful in the transfer window though. Raphinha has been brilliant this season, but if we’re not able to keep our strongest talents at Elland Road then we could easily find ourselves on a slippery slope.

Thankfully we are not in a position where we need to sell our best players in order to raise funds, but the club still need to be careful with how they spend money.

Leeds fans have waited an awful long time to welcome Premier League football back to Elland Road and make new memories, and we want them to have as much time as possible doing just that when fans are allowed back into grounds.
