Jesse Marsch reveals what Leeds United keeper Illan Meslier told him in private about France and World Cup 2022

Jesse Marsch reveals Leeds United goalkeeper Illan Meslier has told him that he will not be going to the World Cup with France this month.

The Frenchman has been on the cusp of a call-up from Les Bleus but has not yet been picked by Didier Deschamps.

The 22-year-old does not expect this to change either and envisages one month of no senior football when the league is on a break.

Via Twitter, BBC’s Adam Pope wrote, “JM asked about Meslier’s potential to go with France to World Cup. He says he’s chatted to Ilan who thinks it’s unlikely.”

Wrong call

Meslier is one of the best young goalkeepers in Europe and his stock only seems to be rising with each passing season.

Should be introduced into the France setup now, he could be their first choice keeper for the next decade and even beyond that.

Hugo Lloris will eventually hang up his boots to focus on his club career and Meslier should be the one stepping into his shoes.

Stylistically, they’re very similar and Meslier is everything one would want from a modern-day goalkeeper.

Deschamps appears to be too rigid and bias towards keepers he’s used to and once he’s no longer the coach, Meslier is certainly going to be in line for a call-up.

Hopefully, he enjoys this well needed break and comes back stronger in the second half of the campaign.

In other Leeds United news, a Sky Sports pundit has delivered Jesse Marsch’s “sack” verdict after what he heard last month.
