Jesse Marsch reveals 'bizarre' injury to Archie Gray that left Leeds United youngster 'in no joking mood'

Archie Gray has endured a frustrating start to the season with Leeds United after suffering a bizarre injury to his toe that has left him sidelined.

Gray is widely viewed as one of Leeds United’s most promising youngsters, and he stood out in the club’s pre-season tour in the summer.

He sadly suffered an ankle injury that saw him stretchered off, and he’s since picked up another injury that has again stalled his season.

Marsch revealed exactly how Gray picked up his latest toe injury and was that bemused that he was ready to joke about it – Gray on the other hand was definitely not.

“Archie’s injury was a really bizarre one,” Marsch said, as quoted by the Yorkshire Evening Post.

“I’ve heard a little bit conflicting stories from his mother and him but something where he ran into a door or something with his toe. It’s something silly like this.

“I was ready to sort of joke around with him about it but the next day I saw him and he was in no joking mood. He was really upset.

“He had no shoes on and he stubbed his toe, hit his big toe on the door, and it wound up putting a little fracture in one of the little joints or whatever.

Minor setback

Gray will eventually look back on his injury and laugh. The 16-year-old is too highly thought of at Elland Road to have one injury derail his chances of making the first team.

His progression in the youth academy has been eye-catching, and after he eventually recovers from his minor injury he’ll likely be right back in training with the first team.

He was a standout star in pre-season, with Leeds fans immediately taking to him as a fan favourite. Marsch’s willingness to joke with him about his injury shows how confident the American is that he’ll eventually break into the first team at Elland Road.

Plus, it doesn’t seem like it’ll be long until he’s back in action. When Gray first suffered the injury, his expected recovery time was four weeks. With a fortnight having already passed, Gray can be expected back at Thorp Arch this month.

It’s unlikely he’ll be spotted in the team at Elland Road anytime soon – or even on the bench for that matter. But at least Gray can return to the youth teams and start building up more momentum and experience – just somebody please keep him away from doors.
