Jesse Marsch is ‘dreaming big’ as Leeds United manager

Jesse Marsch has outlined his hugely ambitious targets as manager of Leeds United as he looks to restore the club to its former glory.

The American took over from club legend Marcelo Bielsa in February with the Whites looking set for Premier League relegation.

Since then, the former RB Leipzig boss has transformed the mood at Elland Road as they sit comfortably in 16th boasting an eight-point gap on the drop zone.

Avoiding relegation isn’t Marsch’s only goal. Speaking to BBC Sport West Yorkshire via Leeds Live, Marsch said: “What does success mean? I don’t do this without the end goal in mind and I don’t mind saying we want to win trophies.

“This was a big thing in Germany. You’re not supposed to say that. Because you’re only setting yourselves up for failure. But come on, man, this is this job. This business is about dreaming big and pushing every day to try to achieve those goals.”

“I want this club to be everything it deserves to be,” he added. “I want this club to day by day, year by year, see if we can climb the ladder a little bit and establish ourselves more and more and more. I know how important it was for the club to get back to the Premier League and certainly, our focus right now is to maintain our ability to stay in this league.

“And then, in the summer we really have to think ‘okay, how do we implement a plan that can help us stage by stage, step by step, get bigger and bigger and better and better.”

Progress

There was a horrible feeling around the club when Bielsa was sacked. The Argentine was a revolution at Leeds and the fans found it very hard to forget the club legend.

Marsch’s start spelt trouble but there have been massive improvements in this Whites team the longer he has been in charge.

They now look like a very competitive team in every game rather than being trampled all over in those dark final several games under Bielsa.

Ultimately it was the right call and the club clearly has a long term plan in place with the American coach.

He is very uplifting when speaking to the media, making it very hard not to buy into his plans which only bodes well for the Whites’ players in the future.

This squad is in desperate need of reinforcements in the summer and hopefully the Leeds chiefs back the new boss, giving him all the tools he needs for what should be a very exciting next season.
