Jermaine Jenas delivers verdict on Leeds United star Kalvin Phillips in England v Croatia

Jermaine Jenas was impressed by Leeds United star Kalvin Phillips in the first half of England’s Euro 2020 opener against Croatia on Sunday.

Phillips, 25, made his ninth appearance for the Three Lions against the 2018 World Cup runners-up at Wembley.

The Elland Road academy product played really well in the opening 45 minutes and even after getting caught offside at one point in the 39th minute, Jenas praised the midfielder.

Speaking on BBC One, Jenas said: “I don’t mind, it’s a good run. He just catches it too quick and gets himself offside but it was needed at the time.

“There were a lot of players standing and looking at [Kieran] Trippier and it needed that run from deep. I’ve said before, I’m enjoying how he’s adapted to that midfield role.

“Not just playing next to [Declan] Rice but playing a bit higher, having an impact with things like that. It was important for the structure of how the midfield works.”

Even Guy Mowbray said that Phillips “impressed” in the opening 45 minutes of England Euro 2020 opener versus Croatia.

The midfielder was brilliant on the ball and off it as he contributed in both the attack and defence.

While he did find himself offside at that moment Jenas was talking about, he was at least trying to make those runs, which says a lot more than Raheem Sterling and Harry Kane, who didn’t do a lot.

Phillips has shown how vital he can be for England and we cannot wait to see how he gets on in the second half.

The fact he started gained quite a negative reaction on Twitter but a lot of those concerns were allayed.

In other Leeds United news, Jose Mourinho has made a claim about Phillips.
