Jermaine Beckford surprised Leeds United haven’t made more signings
Leeds United are looking to impress in the Premier League in 2021-22 after putting in some solid performances upon returning to the top-flight last term.
The Elland Road outfit finished the campaign in ninth place and will look to break into the European places and improve on last season’s finish.
Some teams struggle to do well in their second season in the Premier League once the promotion euphoria dies down, but Jermaine Beckford does not see that happening to his old club.
The Whites hero told talkSPORT, as shown on their official Twitter account: “I don’t think there will be this second season syndrome. Maybe because you look at the manner in which Leeds United approach every single game. It’s the same manner and it doesn’t matter which players are in the team, the strategy, the formation, the style doesn’t change. The energy doesn’t change, the work rate doesn’t change.
“So, with the exception of one or two players possibly getting injured or suspended, I don’t see there being an issue at all. I don’t.”
A talkSPORT host then asked: “What about strength in depth, do they have that?”
To which the former striker replied: “Yes! Yes! I think so, I think there has been a couple of good acquisition in the summer.
“Not as many as I would have thought if I’m honest with you, but that could also be a blessing in disguise, because as we mentioned before, in the beginning of last season, there were players that were injured so they missed a large portion of the season, they are going to come back almost as new signings as well, so you do not want to bring in too many players in too soon and upset the mentality, the mindset of the current players in the squad. So, I don’t think it’s anything to worry about.”
Enough depth?
Junior Firpo is the only new player to have joined Leeds this summer, and we need to get in at least two more additions.
With left-back sorted out, central midfield and attack could do with one quality addition each.
Marcelo Bielsa’s side struggled to pick up results when Kalvin Phillips suffered an injury last season, and that would most likely repeat itself if a midfielder capable of filling in for him is not brought in.
Ben White was able to play in the role while with us despite primarily being a centre-back, but none of the current options has been able to impress there.
The Leeds attack need a versatile forward that can play as a winger, a number nine and a creator, but such players do not come cheap.
While it is good to land bargain deals, we need to start splashing the cash once in a while if we realistically want to compete with the bigwigs for a top-seven finish.
We are not going to be spending £50million or £100million on one player soon like Arsenal and Manchester City have done respectively in recent days.
However, we need to start making some statements of intent with big deals too, and a marquee addition to the squad this summer would be nice.
